Avery Family Heirloom

A fellow volunteer at the Boulder History Museum brought this fascinating quilt in to show me and I was instantly enchanted. Not only is it extremely old and in decent shape for its age, but it also has the most fascinating fabrics. One of the materials is a small printed calico that was likely printed with an iron mordant that is now eating away at the background material. The fabric found at center is a block printed material with a geometric design reminiscent of middle eastern textiles. The last material is found around the center medallion fabric and exhibits block printing of pineapples and a design similar to the very early paisley pattern. Though the "jury" is still out on exact dating of this quilt, the fabrics designs would hint towards 1750s-1850s.
