Conservation of Silk Shattering

Image 01March 2011

Due to an upcoming exhibition, this garment needed conservation on its silk shattered lining. Using silk crepeline I stabalized the lower edges of the jacket so the shredded silk would not hang out the bottom while on the mannequin in the exhibit. This was actually really tricky because I didn't want my stitches to show on the outside of the jacket, but the lining was so completely shredded that it didn't offer a great foundation for attaching the crepeline. It was also difficult to do so much sewing while working hard not to touch or move the silk lining which was shattering more and more with every shift. Upon finishing this project I was extremely proud and renewed in my love of proper conservation. It was also fun to put my strong sewing skills to use.
