Flag Rolling

Image 01Dec 2012

A large amount of historic American flags were found within the Boulder History Museum's collections. I assisted in rolling the flags so they would be better protected and stored with no folds or creases. The flags were originally crammed into acidic cardboard boxes. The collections manager at the museum was in the process of taking them out of the boxes and another volunteer was working on documenting and photographing them for the records. My part was small compared to the other volunteer, but I was excited to do burn identification on them and to help roll them properly with leaves of tissue paper between all layers. After they were rolled, the tubes with which they were rolled upon were hung in the shelving so the textile wasn't being squished by the weight of the roll.
